Bright, vivid straw-gold. Enticing, utterly pure aromas of lemon drop, flowers and cinnamon leap out of the glass. Then pristine and lively on the palate, with laser-like precision to the tropical fruit and white stone fruit flavors. The finish is long and minerally, with a mouthwatering quality thanks to bright, harmonious acidity. I had this wine recently at dinner with a friend and almost finished the bottle off by myself! Never heard of Kerner? A cross of Riesling and Trollinger, Kerner is an aromatic white grape varietal developed in 1929 in Germany, named for nineteenth century German poet Justinus Kerner. It was released for general cultivation in 1969 but didn't go far; it remains pretty much exclusively grown in parts of Germany and in the areas Austria-Swiss-Italian borders. A family-run domaine since 1142, Pacher-hof produces some of this area's most exciting white wines from varietals most people don't associate with Italy, including this crisp, fresh, completely delicious Kerner. As K&L's Italian wine buyer says, "it's in a league by itself!" Enjoy it as an aperitif, or with simply prepared fish. You'll be hooked! (Chiara Shannon, K&L Head Sommelier)
