Finding nice equilibrium between ripeness and fruit, Seghesio has come up with a balanced and wonderfully accessible wine that is rife with juicy blackberry qualities and throws in a touch of sweet oak. If not yet as polished nor as complex as it will be with age, it is nonetheless quite tasty now and will do the trick nicely as a foil to Pasta Puttanesca or those bathed in a hearty Bolognese meat sauce. This excellent 2010 Zinfandel was made from a blend of 89% Zinfandel, 9% Petite Sirah and 2% Syrah, and was aged 10 months in primarily American oak and a small amount of French wood. This 80,000-case cuvee exhibits lovely strawberry and black cherry fruit notes intermixed with hints of pepper, spice box and a meaty/charcuterie aroma. It is an enticing, medium to full-bodied, dense, rustic Zinfandel to drink over the next several years. (10/ 2012)

Zinfandel

- The bid to name Zinfandel California's "State Varietal" may have failed, but this red wine grape, grown extensively in California since the mid-1800s, is grown in few other places in the world. Sadly, much of what's cultivated today is planted where it's too hot and flat. But when planted to well-drained, hillside vineyards that are warm but not too hot, like those in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley and Amador County in the Sierra Foothills, Zinfandel can produce wines with plenty of character. High in natural alcohol and tannin, grown carefully it can be rich and complex, with dark fruit berry fruit and peppery spice. The most known example of Zinfandel outside of California is Italy's Primitivo, which can be similar in style, but is often a bit lighter and less alcoholic than West Coast examples.
