2002 Pierre Paillard Grand Cru Brut Vintage Champagne
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
(made from a 50/50 blend of pinot noir and chardonnay; disgorged January 25, 2012): Light, bright yellow-gold. Musky orchard fruits and blood orange on the intensely perfumed nose. Weighty and broad on entry, then tighter in the mid-palate, offering sappy orange zest and redcurrant flavors and a bracing note of chalky minerality. Shows impressive energy and power on the finish, leaving behind a stony note.
Backed by racy acidity, this lively version offers hints of strawberry, cream, ripe cherry and honeyed apricot mixed with richer notes of pastry, toasted hazelnut and ground spice. Fresh ginger shows on the finish. Disgorged January 2012. Drink now through 2023.
This wondrous bubbly is half Pinot Noir and half Chardonnay, all from the 2002 vintage. It is a complex and intense wine with aromas of brioche and grilled French bread along with honey and fig. A fine and delicate finish makes it ideal with seafoods and sushi.
