Over the weekend the stores poured the first of the big 2009 tastings and this was a stand-out hit in Hollywood. The nose is dominated by spice but the palate is layered with ripe rich black fruits with a long finish of spice and heady blackberry.

The Rollan de By is more proof that value in Bordeaux is here for those of us who want to look. Clyde and I poured this during a Saturday tasting and it impressed nearly every one of the 60 tasters who attended, and was by far our biggest seller of the day. Now I have to figure out how much to buy for myself! This precocious '09 tastes so good right now that it will be difficult to keep my hands off of! I guess that means it is time to restack the cellar, and put this on the bottom of the pile... And buy a couple extra for the near term.
Drink from 2012 to 2022

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Merlot

- A very popular red grape variety found in the great wines of St. Emilion and Pomerol. It is the most planted variety in Bordeaux, and it has also become an extremely fashionable red in many regions including California. Although it has a reputation to be smooth, and easy to drink when young, Merlot is also capable of producing extremely intense wines as well. It is often used as a blending agent with Cabernet Sauvignon.
