2010 Domaine du Roumané Côtes du Rhône

SKU #1082601

Last spring, team K&L traveled to the southern Rhône to swirl, sip and taste wines from the much-anticipated 2010 vintage. As expected, all of the heavy hitters from the region made quite an impression. But what is even more telling about this fantastic vintage is the superior quality of the more everyday Rhônes from the Côtes du Rhône. Enter the 2010 Domaine du Roumané Côtes du Rhône, a rich and generous Grenache-based red that we suspect is going to fly off our shelves The 2010 Domaine du Roumané Côtes du Rhône is composed of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah. To preserve the more fruit-forward characteristics of the two varietals, winegrower and vigneron Herve Roman de-stems the fruit completely and ferments the wine at low temperatures. The higher percentage of Syrah in the blend lends a considerable degree of licorice and spice. That's a complexity not evident in many a Rhône offered at the same modest price point. Enjoy now and over the next several years with hearty winter fare. Clyde recommends Cassoulet. (Mulan Chan-Randel, K&L Rhône Valley & French Regional buyer) Licorice aromas and extremely spicy on the palate. Excellent balance. (Clyde Beffa, K&L) 14% abv.

Although the 2010 Rhône Valley vintage is not as great as the 2009, there were some exceptional village wines made by some of the great, smaller producers (typical!) and some really nice drinking Côtes du Rhônes. This is a perfect example of a “really nice drinking” CdR from one of the small producers that we directly import. A blend of Grenache (65%) and Syrah, this deeply-colored Rhône Valley red is loaded with white pepper to anise-like spiciness on its nose and its ever expansive, broad palate. Rich, lush, almost Hermitage-like, the tannins are well integrated in a very serious, complex wine that drinks well now, but will age and continue to improve over the next few years. Rusty has informed me that this Gem will be one of our house reds for however long it is around. 14% ABV

The southern Rhone Valley has enjoyed an unprecedented run of great vintages over the past decade. Great news for the bargain hunter since they have produced a bounty of affordable, everyday red wines in the $10 to $15 range. The 2010 Domaine du Roumane Cotes du Rhone is a great example. A blend of Grenache & Syrah with loads of spice and generous fruit. I look to pair these wines with anything slow cooked - roasted, braised, or stewed. They are also excellent with smoky flavors, BBQ, etc.

A great value 2010 CDR. This is a direct buy for us and we just knew it was going to be a winner. The high quality Syrah content (40%) gives the wine some extra richness and depth beyond some of its competitors. The bright fruit and spice of the Grenache adds some nice high tones to the wine. Excellent balance, a very complete wine for $13.99!

Country:

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Sub-Region:

Rhone

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
