This is the exact same wine as the De Meric "Grande Reserve Sous Bois" Brut Champagne, now being sold under the name of the late founder, Daniel Ginsburg. Don't let the low price fool you, we have eliminated all the courtiers, export brokers, import companies and distributor mark-ups to bring this incredible Champagne to you directly! This wine comes to us from a very small, quality-conscious negociant in Ay, in the very center of Champagne. The wine is made of 80% Pinot Noir from Ay, Mareuil-Sur-Ay and Mutigny, 15% Chardonnay from Cramant, Avize and Oger and 5% Meunier from Cumieres. It is vinified half in old oak barrels and half in stainless steel tanks for the perfect balance of rounded richness and zesty refreshment. We kicked off the 2013 K&L staff party with a case of this, and loved it for its complexity; complexity that was arrived at through patience. With eight years of ageing on the lees, it is hard to believe that the retail price is so reasonable. If you love the "English style" of Champagne, with brioche and richness at the forefront, and plenty of Christmas spices on the long finish, you will love this wine. It went exceptionally well with the ham crostini that was being served as an appetizer!

This wine is a treat for all Champagne drinkers. As I began my writing my tasting notes, I was struck by the balance between richness and uplifting freshness. The nose is mixed between a toasty rich notes and a wonderful zippy citrus quality that came together in a very nice balance. On the palate, core fruit, pear, ripe green apple, and a lovely mouth feel greet you on the first sip. The texture of this wine is full, but without taking away from the freshness. A lovely bead along with a very crisp and clean finish leaves a very cheery and delicious impression. As I finished my notes and got down to the business of enjoying a glass with friends, this wine integrated itself to the evening quite well. It is the perfect accompaniment to a night of company because it has both broad appeal, rich and just plain delicious, as well as enough intrigue and depth to keep more experienced Champagne drinkers more than happy.
