A lot of Cabernet at this price. Combines ripe, plump, plum, black cherry and black berry flavors in a rich, smooth, polished style, full bodied and firming nicely on the finish, where the tannins have a minerally edge. Drink now through 2021. (12/ 2011)
That review from WS came from James Laube, who was really impressed with the wine at the end of November when he tasted it. Here's what else he had to say around the time of the tasting: "Last week, in one of my regular weekly blind tastings, I came across a pair of wines that consumers will love (referring to both the Beringer Knights Valley Reserve Cabernet and this non-reserve bottling)...These are the kinds of wines that get you excited about 2009 reds. So far there have been many exciting wines from this vintage, but also a few I've tried that show the difficulties of the growing season. From Hook's perspective (Laurie Hook is the winemaker at Beringer), between 2009 and 2008, the former is the stronger year, and it reflects subtle changes Beringer has made in its vineyard.... Knights Valley has been on my mind the past few years, since time and again the wines from this small valley north of Napa Valley continue to impress. Beringer is the old-timer here, having made Cabernet since 1976."
