Ferreira "Duque de Braganca" 20-year-old Tawny Port

SKU #1080285 93 points Wine Enthusiast

Always great, this is softer, less intense than in the past. But there is still great richness, and power as well as smoothness, burnt caramel blending well with the spirit, and finishing with its inimitable fresh acidity. (11/ 2007)

92 points Wine Spectator

Rich, smooth and polished, exhibiting an array of dried apricot, pear and guava flavors that are accented by plenty of apple wood smoke notes. The lush finish surges with mineral, along with hints of peat and ginger cream. Drink now. 300 cases imported. (12/ 2010)

Jancis Robinson

Lovely complexity of a 20 year old - citrus and nuts and still a sweetness of fruit. Intense and dry-tasting with good freshness and surprising depth of fruit. (8/ 2009)

K&L Notes

Ferreira's ports are some of the most impressive that we have tasted this season. Named by Wine & Spirits Magazine as one of the top producers of 2012, this historic house, which also produces the world renowned, ageworthy, and pricey "Barca Velha" reds, Ferreira is one of the great ambassadors of Port and Portuguese wines.

This shows amazing nuance and freshness, and the nuttiness comes in late to create a great overarching, transitory complexity. This would prove versatile with custards or nutty desserts, but it's certainly also one to savor on its own.

Portugal

- Although quite small, Portugal produces a great variety of wines ranging from light and fizzy Vinho Verde to hearty and tannic Port. Portugal is Europe's fourth-largest wine-producing region, and has been exporting its wine since the 14th century. The Douro Valley of Portugal is the original and current home for the world's finest Port. The valley spans from east of the city of Oporto all the way to the border of Spain and is the country's best known wine region. Lesser-appreciated DOCs like Bairrada and D„o area also emerging for their fine, rustic reds. Click for a list of bestselling items from Portugal.
Sub-Region:

Port

- Port is a fortified wine made by stopping the fermentation with brandy. The result is a heavy sweet wine, most often red, that is dense, rich and high in alcohol. Port is made all over the world with some great results in Australia and South Africa, but the most famous of these dessert wines come from Portugal. The great port houses (or lodges) are located along the Duoro River on the steep slate slopes high above the valley floor. There are several styles of port, including Ruby, Tawny, Vintage Character, Late Bottle Vintage, Colheita, and Single Quinta. Vintage ports are made in special years that the houses declare.
