Château Bellevue-La-Randée is located on the commune of Galgon. The wine making is traditional; alcoholic fermentation takes place in concrete tanks, as well as ageing. The wine is filtered before bottling. It consists of Merlot 45%, Cabernet Franc 10%, Cabernet Sauvignon 45%. We tasted this wine in April on our Bordeaux trip, and bought it immediately. The wine is quite structured for ageing but can be enjoyed now after decanting. Great blackberry aromas and flavor. Sweet on the palate with silky, round tannins present. Broad shoulders. Very full bodied, and after one hour quite lush on palate. For $9.99 this is a steal! (Clyde Beffa, K&L's Bordeaux buyer)

Just another 2009 vin ordinaire from a great vintage that tastes great now and probably will improve over the next several years. Medium-deep ruby in color, the nose offers blackberry to currant-like fruit that carries to a soft, silky palate impression with bright fruit and lovely richness on the finish. Rusty has deemed this Gem another house red for the month. 14% ABV

We tried this last April in Bordeaux, and it was one of the standouts. At our staff tasting it needed a couple hours to open fully. It boasts ripe red fruit aromas with a rich palate of bitter chocolate, raspberry and a slight dustiness that carries through on the long finish.

Very soft and forward with ripe, round fruit. Acidity balances things out nicely. Excellent persistence and length. Good value.

Another unbelievably satisfying and well made wine from the 2009 vintage in Bordeaux. This is very gentle and plush in texture with a depth of warm fig and roasted fruit. The smooth and creamy middle eases into a cocoa dusted finish and fine slightly chalky tannin that give leanght and lift. Simply delicious.

There is plenty of fruit and tannins, but on first tasting the dominant flavor was vegetal. An unfinished, recorked bottle improved after a night in the refrigerator, so it should help to decant this for a couple hours before drinking.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
