The 2010 Chardonnay Tous Ensemble is a gorgeous wine laced with lime, pastry and white flowers. Exotic aromas and flavors meld into mineral notes as the wine opens up in the glass. This entry-level Chardonnay is made entirely in tank. Best of all, it is a terrific value. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2014. K&L Notes

Wells Guthrie founded Copain in 1999 with the intent to produce Pinot Noir and Syrah in styles inspired by his travels and experiences in France, where he was influenced by producers in Burgundy and the Northern Rhone. It took ten years for Copain to release a Chardonnay, the first vintage of which was 2009. As with his Pinot Noir, Guthrie aims for a Burgundian expression with the 2010 Tous Ensemble Anderson Valley Chardonnay. Very limited use of oak and "hands off" winemaking results in a clean, bright Chardonnay that is balanced, food-friendly, and made for immediate enjoyment.

An absolutely beautiful example of just how balanced and fresh California Chardonnay can be. Fermented in tank, this is all about the pure fuit and fresh texture. Yum

Real CA chardonnay! Bright, fresh, complex and with abundant mineral qualities. Sourced from top Chard vineyards in the cool Anderson Valley. This chard is fermented and matured in tank. This wine is the antithesis to oaky-buttery styles of CA Chard.

One of my favorite wineries during our August field trip, Well Guthrie's "Tous Ensemble" is the classic expression of Burgundian chardonnay- apple, pear, brioche, and honeysuckle. Medium acidity and very well balanced. All stainless steel and no malolactic fermentation, it's the 10 months on the lees that gives the brioche notes here. A beautiful introduction to the Copain portfolio!

If you are a fan of oaky, buttery Chardonnays this is not the wine for you. Instead the 2010 Copain Tous Ensemble Anderson Valley Chardonnay offers bright citrus notes, a rich texture, and a clean, mineral finish. Nothing here but pure Chardonnay fruit. And at a great price too.

This is a nice blend of new and old world. The nose and palate is ripe peaches and citrus zest along with a touch of spice. It shows bright acidity (no Malo) keeping the riper fruit in check. The long finish shows just a touch of toastiness and spice with more citrus zest.

Fermented in stainless tanks with 10 months on lees for texture. No Malo. Green apple and pear notes, bright acid and citrus finish. Toasty yet restrained and very well balanced. Beautifully made chardonnay and an absolute steal at $20.

Copain is quickly becoming my go to domestic winery! I love this beautiful representation Of the Chardonnay grape. Stainless steel tanks, no malolactic fermentation, and all natural yeasts are used. This gives it liveliness and great acidity! No oak bomb here folks!

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. Surprisingly, though, what you get when you buy Chardonnay can differ greatly from country to country and even within one country, depending on the climate where it's grown and how it is vinified and aged.
