2004 Marqués de Murrieta "Dalmau" Reserva Rioja (Elsewhere $150)

SKU #1078588 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2004 Dalmau Reserva is sourced from a single 50+ year old plot within the 300 hectare Ygay estate. Made from a blend of 86% Tempranillo, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Graciano, the wine was aged for 21 months in new French barriques. Dark ruby/purple-colored, it reveals an aromatic array of toasty new oak, spice box, mineral, blueberry, and black currants. Considerably more powerful than its traditionally made siblings, on the palate if is full-bodied, firm, layered, and quite concentrated. The spicy flavors fall on the dark side of the spectrum with blackberry, plum, and black currant in the forefront. The wine has at least a decade of aging potential and will be at its peak from 2015 to 2030 although it can be enjoyed now with a charcoal-grilled ribeye. Marques de Murietta remains a benchmark for traditional Rioja. (4/ 2008)

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Opaque purple. Sexy, oak-spiced blackberry, cherry-cola and vanilla on the nose, with subtle floral and baking spice qualities adding complexity. Fat and sweet, with deep dark berry liqueur flavors, a velvety texture and obvious oak character. Emphatically modern, with strong finishing spiciness and lingering jammy berry flavors. If your Rioja paradigm is the traditional style, this one will cause apoplexy. (8/ 2008)

90 points Wine Spectator

This plush red delivers sweet berry and black plum fruit, with chocolate and toasty oak notes that give way to a floral, spicy finish. Velvety, yet has enough tannin for grip. (6/ 2008)

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Tempranillo

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penčdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.
Country:

Spain

- With more land under vine than any other country in the world, Spain is the great sleeping wine giant. In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
