2009 Anselmi Pignolo Superiore

The estate's website describes this with the follwing: "a supremely elegant wine with vibrant, lingering aromas with great potential. Redolent of fruit, such as bilberry and blackberry, with toasted and vanilla notes. Dry, warm and full-bodied palate. The tannins come through very softly thanks to the time spent in barriques." However, that's not 100% accurate - a few details appear to have been lost in translation. The wine is supremely elegant, that's for sure. Vibrant, lingering aromas? Absolutely. Great potential? Not sure what that means as the wine is delicous now. Redolent of fruit? Sure. Bilberry? No idea, never had a bilberry. Dry, warm and full bodied? Yeah, more or less. Soft tannins from the oak? I'll concede, but this wine is by no means oaky. What we have here is an EXCELLENT example of an underappreciated grape from the Veneto. Spicy, leafy, berry aromas and flavors that immediately remind me of the best Chinon or Samur-Champigny from the Loire. This is an absolutely lovely wine and an exceptional value from one of the Veneto's best Soave producers. (Chris Miller, K&L Italian Wine Specialist - Hollywood)

A couple weeks back, a newish sales rep came by to see me with a couple wines. I was quite busy and there was a mix up on our tasting appointment, so I wasn't expecting him. As a courtesy, I somewhat begrudgingly tasted through the wines and super stoked I did! This wine flippin' rocks!! I've always loved the Pignolo grape, but that's because I'm kind of a geek, as the wines can sometimes be a little too austere and herbal for a lot of people's palate. This one just nails it though. Lots of spicy, peppery, dried herbs and berries, on a racy frame with firm tannins and acidity but plush and rounded out enough to be approachable. If you like Cab Franc based wines from the Loire Valley, you will adore this little gem from the hills north of Venice. Highly recommended. CM, LA Italian Wine Specialist

I must admit I was a bit skeptical of this Pignolo due to its low price point, but I've had success with these in the past for similar money. In glass one hour. The aromas on this one are definitely very typical Pignolo, showing iron, sweet ground lamb, graphite, and some sweet candied (gummy) fruit. The aromas are very smooth, not overbearing, and pretty darn graceful. The palate is light to medium bodied and fairly light in texture and overall depth of flavor. What is there is very nice, earthy fruit, mild acid, and just slight tannins. The finish hits with similar pleasing acids and begins developing some light citrus flavors coupled with some slightly green briar, and evolves to under ripe strawberries. A delicious and nearly flawless wine, but without the complexity nor structure of more "serious" Pignolos. This is 100% varieteally correct, not trying to do something modern with this traditional grape, but it is made in a more drink now style than any other Pignolo I've had. There's virtually no tannins on the finish. Nothing wrong with that, and it's a wonderful every day wine. Definitely worth seeking out to drink over the next couple of years. (89 points)
