His objective is simple: to make the kind of wines he likes, for everyday consumption. Fortunately, we share his tastes! In Cabernet, this translates to a medium-bodied, complex and approachable style, with fruit, acidity, and oak in perfect harmony, moderate alcohol and suave tannins. The 2010 Amplio, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, is all blackcurrant, black raspberry, and plum, spiked with sweet and savory spices and a little earthiness on the finish. Crowd-pleasing and food-friendly at once, this is California Cabernet with a European twist. Balanced, delicious, and only 13.5% abv, this Cab is meant to be enjoyed young and perfect for entertaining!

A great value cabernet from a great Portugese winemaker. Dark, black fruits with savory spices and earthy notes on the finish. At a moderate 13.5 alcohol, you can enjot TWO glasses!

At only 13.5% alcohol this is slightly less ripe and a bit more elegant than most Cabs at this price point, but the added complexity is what makes it really stand out from the pack. Currant, raspberry and plum fruit compete with savory herb, a touch of spice and a hint of earth in this balanced and harmonious wine. At just over 10 bucks a bottle this represents surprising value in California Cabernet.

I decidedly agree with our luscious description of this little bargain cab! Blackberries, black plum and nice spice make this a very easy, affordable- and TASTY!- red for parties or to keep around for everyday drinking! Well done, Urbanite Cellars! Keep those hits coming!

What a great Cab for the money! Rich and fruit forward but not too ripe with some wonderful earthy undertones.

It's back! This was a very popular wine with the 2009 vintage. This is the perfect party wine for New Year's. Bright raspberry and spice with a soft mouth feel and bright acidity.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
