The Fricke 2009 Lorcher Krone Riesling trocken evinces a struck-flint smokiness whose reductive origins were evidenced by considerably improved performance after it was decanted. Still, piquancy is this wines middle name, what with its notes of peach kernel, crushed stone, and toasted nuts, all embedded in the context of relatively full body. It clings with impressive stubbornness if a certain degree of austerity. Fricke considers this the more serious wine that 'shouldnt really be drunk young,' whereas Seligmacher 'is the more charming.' I wouldn't disagree with that assessment provided 'serious' is not taken to imply 'better'! But I would want to revisit this in 2-4 years before Id attempt to predict the extent of its further potential. (9/ 2011)
