2008 Donati Family Vineyard Paicines Claret

Following up the 2007 vintage which was a Gold Medal Winner at the 2011 SF Chronicle Wine Competition, the 2008 Donati Family Paicines Claret is another winner in the under $20 category. Inspired by the style of the Left-Bank in Bordeaux, this wine is a blend based on Merlot, with small amounts of Cab, Cab Franc and Syrah blended in, all grown in the Paicines appellation in the center of coastal California. Located inland from Monterey, about seventeen miles north of Pinnacles National Monument and Park, this open, treeless area is exposed to oceanic winds but is protected from heavier evening fogs. Add to that a combination of high-draining, alluvial soils and you've got a zone well-suited to Bordeaux varieties! Barrel aged in a combination of French and American oak, the 2009 Claret offers a medley of supple red and black fruit aromas and flavors with hints of anise, leather, and baking spices. Medium-bodied, with smooth tannins and subtle earthy accents, this is tasty on its own or paired with a variety of foods. Cheers!

As stated by all reviews, this is a lush, black cherry and blackberry fruited, Merlot based wine with a bit of oak and spice on it. This bottle is guarenteed to be a hit at any bbq because of the ability to pair well with anything thrown at it! The Donati Claret has been a favorite for many vintages for good reason!

A new label this year, but the same great wine on the inside. Lush and round with dark red fruits, kissed with a touch of richness from the oak that it sees. This wine doesn't command the high price because it isn't from a glamorous appelation, however it is quite a lot of wine when compared to 20 to 30 dollar wines from places with more perceived cache.

The Donati Claret has been a favorite at K&L for some time now. The 2008 is even better than the previous vintages. It is soft, lush and round, with nice dark berry flavors. A wonderful California style Bordeaux like blend. The 2008 Claret is ready to dirnk now and will be enjoyable alone or with food.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.

- These heavily planted regions on either side of the vast Salinas Valley account for much of the mass-produced, commercial wine sold in supermarkets nationwide.
