 The 2011 Kloof Street Chenin Blanc is sourced from younger vines up to 30 years in age, 80% tank fermented and 20% in old wood. The bouquet is fresh and lively with bundles of fresh fruit such as pineapple, guava and a squeeze of lemon. The palate has quite a creamy texture that makes it feel as if it has been aged in new oak: very smooth and harmonious with lime, pineapple and a dash of spice on the finish. This represents a good value Swartland Chenin for immediate drinking. Drink now.  (8/ 2011)

Chris and Andrea Mullineux are a rising star husband and wife winemaking team in Swartland, South Africa, who farm their ancient shale, granite, and gravel soils naturally, following minimalist practices. Sourced from mostly 30 year old vines planted in shale and schist based soils of Riebeek Kasteel Mountain, it isn't surprising that this 100% Chenin Blanc is dry, snappy, and mineral-driven, with bracing acidity. This is not a superripe, oakey style (as sometimes can come from warm climates); it's all about acidity and balance here! There's just the right amount of mid-palate richness, and touches of honey round out the tropical citrus aromas and flavors in the finish. This is balanced, crisp and very food-friendly. Viskoekies, traditional South African fish cakes, would be a nice pairing. Look out Loire Valley!

This South African chenin blanc is round and creamy, with spice, mineral and tropical fruit notes and just enough acidity. While pleasant, this wine doesn't have the vibrant personality of other, less-oaked South African chenin blancs.

- Also called Pineau de la Loire and Pineau d'Anjou. Chenin Blanc is an expressive white French varietal that makes beautiful dry, sweet and sparkling wines. Traditionally grown in the Loire Valley, the wines made from this varietal are typically labeled geographically. Vouvray Chenins are traditionally medium-sweet; SavenniŤres Chenins are typically bright and crisp; Coteaux du Layon Chenins like Bonezeaux and Quarts de Chaume are among the world's most sought-after sweet wines, and the sparkling Chenins of Saumur are perfumed and delicious. What all of these iterations of the grape have in common is their ability to age, a gift bestowed upon them because of the grape's naturally high-acidity.

- Now that it has adopted a multi-racial attitude, and now that the world has embraced its government and its exports, South Africa has become a major wine producer. Unfortunately, South Africa has had a difficult time joining the ranks of competitive winemaking countries. During the anti-apartheid sanctions in the 1980s, South African wine was dealt the huge blow when it was removed from the international market, and for political reasons it was quite difficult for wine producers to market wine to the black majority. Things are finally looking up for the wine industry here, and quality has never been higher. South Africa produces a grape cloned from Pinot Noir and Cinsault, called Pinotage, which is the country's unique varietal. Chenin Blanc (known as Steen) makes up one-third of its vines.
