Here's a monumental release for the K&L spirits department that marks the beginning of Faultline Spirits, our new label that will function the same way for booze that our Kalinda label does for wine. This premier release is a very special brandy from a small cellar in the rural Borderies countryside. Brought to us by our friend Nicolas Palazzi, it's interesting and exciting in a way that Cognac usually isn't - it's spicy, vibrant, bold and exhilarating. Unlabeled as such, but of XO maturity - rich caramel, baked fruits, supple toffee and toasted wood rush to the palate like a rocket ship in this full-throttle, unfiltered, cask strength edition. This is not the gentle, elegant Cognac seen in just about 99.9% of other bottlings - this is a Bourbon lover's brandy. Much like David and I have done throughout Scotland, Nicolas has made his name sourcing hidden treasures buried in the depths of France's Cognac region. Last year he brought us an unreal 1951 barrel strength release that made us weep with joy. Only now is he getting the recognition he deserves - Parker just rated that Cognac an astounding 98 points. Luckily we knew about him before everyone else did because this new barrel is another diamond in the rough: a limited-edition, unique, and unprecedented release that shows how much we don't know about Cognac's potential.
