Up-and-coming winemaker Andrew Jones' has been on a roll the past few years, turning out some incredible wines for his Field Recordings label. This, the fourth edition of his Red Blend, this year called "Fiction," does seem so fantastical as to have sprung from his imagination, but one sip and you'll find that it's entirely grounded in reality. Combining Zin, Tempranillo, Grenache, Malbec, Touriga Nacional, Mourvèdre and Syrah, the wine is aged in 25% new oak barrels. Wonderfully aromatic, with leather, bacon, eucalyptus and smoke scents enveloping a core of blueberry fruit, it turns brighter on the palate, with more red fruit, anise, cola, cocoa powder and grilled meat. There's a lingering note of cigar box and spice as well as soft tannins and a core of good acidity. Big, bold and utter delicious.
