2009 Maison Champy Bourgogne Chardonnay "Signature"

This comes from Puligny Montrachet, Meursault, and a bit from Rully. It is barrel fermented in 50% new French oak, but not too high a toast. The result is the minerality of a Burgundy, combined with the richness of a new world Chardonnay. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer, 03/11) According to Allen Meadows: "Here the wood is a bit more evident though still not dominant as it frames slightly more complex and also quite fruity aromas that offer up a fresh trace of citrus that continues onto the round, agreeable and slightly denser and longer flavors." Incredibly well integrated wine, the oak notes actually adds beautifully to the complexity of the wine. Notes of clove, caramel and citrus. Quite round and perhaps a bit tropical? Very long finish. An absolute fantastic buy.

Great balance and oak integration, with mineral notes from Puligny and Rully soils. This is an excellent crossover Burgundy for people who prefer a richer style with more oak influences like you find in California. Very forgiving and generous. By far one of the most open and ready to drink 2009 white Burgundies in stock for under $20 that I have tasted!
