2010 Casa d'Ambra "Frassitelli" Ischia Biancolella

From the Isle of Ischia (the largest of the Phlegrean Islands, this volcanic island is located about 30 km north of Naples in the Tyrrhenian Sea), we were intrigued by this stunning white wine made from the local Biancolella grape at our last Italian staff tasting. In addition to high-draining volcanic soils, this island is home to many sulfuric hot springs, which collectively make for a naturally anti-bacterial grape growing and winemaking environment. The wine is true to its terroir, opening with a mineral-driven nose in which subtle yellow fruit aromas are backlit by the scent of ash. The palate is fat, round, fleshy, but balanced by acidity (thanks to the cooling effects of the ocean).
