2009 Cécile Chassagne Gigondas

(a blend of 80% grenache and 10% each mourvedre and syrah) Dark ruby. Complex scents of cherry-cola, blackcurrant and tobacco, with a hint of star anise. On the serious side and slow to open, offering bitter cherry, dark berry liqueur and herb flavors that gain sweetness with air. Chewy tannins add grip to the smoky, alluringly sweet finish. One of the most elegant and fine tuned southern Rhones to hit our shelves has to be this 2009 Gigondas from vigneronne Cecile Chassagne. Over the past decade, K&L has carried a diverse selection of Grenache-based reds from this talented winemaker. And whether it be a deliciously juicy Cotes du Rhone or a spicy Provencal red, Cecile's wines never disappoint. Her latest release is this delicous Gigondas which is composed of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre. The vineyard is in the heart of the Dentelles de Montmirail and on some of the higher terraces of the appellation. At a modest 13.5% abv, Cecile's Gigondas represents a more elegant style from the juicy 2009 vintage. It's aromatic bouquet reveals nuances of red plum, cherry and raspberry on both the nose and palate. Medium bodied, with ultra fine tannins and an uncharacteristically crunchy acidity make for a delicious and vibrant Rhone red. Try it with black olive and tomato baked chicken or grilled lamb sausage. 13.5% abv.
