Sherman & Hooker's Shebang (Bedrock Wine Co.) "Cuvée IV" Sonoma Valley Red Blend

SKU #1070724 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The NV Shebang IV bursts from the glass with masses of dark, plump fruit. This juicy, mouth-filling red delivers incredible quality for the money in an up-front generous style meant to be enjoyed over the next year or two. The main varieties are Petite Sirah, Syrah and Alicante Bouschet. If there is a better value in California wine, I would like to know about it. This is a ridiculously delicious wine for $12 a bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2014. Morgan Twain-Peterson is one of the most impressive young winemakers I have ever met, and it's not just because he grew up the son of a famous producer. Making wines at this level requires talent, passion, hard work and a great palate, none of which is easily inherited. Along with Mike Officer of Carlisle, Twain-Peterson is on a mission to rediscover what he calls California's old-vine "heritage" vineyards. These historic sites planted by California's early immigrants, often home to unknown field blends, remain some of the most fascinating vineyards in California. Officer and Twain-Peterson were tired of seeing these old sites gobbled up by industrial-scale wineries, so they decided to do something about it. Bravo. (2/ 2012)

Wine Spectator

Chunky and chewy, but not shy on rustic berry flavors, with wild berry and blackberry and minerally notes. Syrah, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. Drink now through 2016. (2/ 2012)

It really is hard to find a better value than Shebang from Bedrock. It is a phenomenal balance of rich red currant and blackberry fruit, great clove and white pepper notes and a just enough acidity to pull it all together. This will pair with just about anything that will fit on your grill at a price that is unheard of for this quality. Stock up!

This non-vintage "old school" California blend from winemaking talent Morgan Twain Peterson (Bedrock Wine Co.) sure delivers a big "shebang" for the buck! Made of Petite Sirah, Syrah, and Alicante Bouschet, it's fully loaded with bright red and spicy black fruits, accented by hints of pepper, mineral, and savory herbs. Not your standard overly oaked Cali wine here, but something unique, expressive of its old vine origins, and totally, lip-smackingly delicious. It's perfect for grilling, picnics, pizza-night, you name it! It is so refreshing to see young, inspired winemakers in California move in the direction of preserving our oldest and most endangered vineyard sites while at the same time endeavoring to produce wines that are an expression of that terroir in a manner that is real, affordable, and readily accessible to the consumer. Keep it up!

Morgan Twain-Peterson may be the most talented young winemaker in United States. How could he not be really growing up in vineyards besides his well known father, winemaker Joel Peterson. Morgan has done exceptionally well in the eyes of the press, and us here at K&L, with his label Bedrock. His wines are thoughfully crafted small production bottlings from old vines located in “Heritage” vineyards throughout California. Hard to come by, these Bedrock wines already have a loyal and rabid following. But where I think Morgan really shines is in his entry level bottling: the Sherman & Hooker’s Shebang! A non-vintage bottling based in the 2008, 2009 and 2010 vintages this may be the best dollar for quality wine coming out of California today. A blend of Syrah, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and Alicante Bouchet this is extremely versatile and pairs just as nicely with a rib-eye as it would with a pork loin or lamb shank. Medium-full in body and loaded with ruddy red fruited charm this wine is packed with complex flavors ending in a crescendo of pepper, thyme, cassis and melt-y tannins all in a bottle that is well less than $15 including tax! There isn’t a better value in the store currently in my mind.

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world. Sub-Region:

California

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year. Sonoma County

- Second in fame only to Napa, this "other" valley offers just about every climate and topography imaginable. From its cool and fog-enshrouded coastal regions on the far west, to the sprawling Alexander Valley on the boarder of Napa and the many little dips and peaks in between, Sonoma has been a vital wine-grape-growing region since the mid 1800s. Important sub-AVAs include Chalk Hill (known for chardonnay and sauvignon blanc), Dry Creek Valley (where zin is king) Knights Valley (largely cabernet land), Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast (both celebrated pinot and chardonnay zones).
