Grant "La Garrocha" Fino El Puerto de Santa Maria (375ml)

SKU #1070715

Grant is one of the few remaining independent bodegas in El Puerto de Santa Maria, indeed one of the few remaining independent bodegas in all of the Sherry triangle. El Puerto is historically an area for almacenistas, producers who sell their stocks to the larger bodegas, which is exactly what Grant had done since the bodega's founding in 1824 until quite recently. These Finos are very distinctive: vinous, expressive, and surprisingly minimally marked by salty, flor flavors. Instead, there is a fresh, fruity quality and a slightly resinous, anise like edge to the wine. This is possibly due to a shorter period of ageing in solera. Anyone who is curious to explore the differences amongs Fino style Sherries really ought to include this amongst their selections; the wine is unique and a real treat. Cinnamon and I spent our honeymoon in El Puerto De Santa Maria at the bottom of the Sherry triangle, and revisiting wines from the area is always a special treat to me. The finos from this area have a rich body, almost to match that of Jerez, but also a saline quality to compete with Manzanilla. I found the Grant La Garrocha to be a great example of the style of this sub region, with aged complexity on the nose and in the mouth, matched by excellent sea breeze snap. We drank this bottle with some excellent hummus from Oren's in Palo Alto as well as some sliced thuringer. This fino went down a little too easy... I might have hogged the half bottle!

This Fino Sherry is on the fresher side of Sherry, with lovely clean lines and refreshing notes of white peach and other stone fruits. What made this Sherry interesting to me was the mouth-coating glycerol quality and the touch of baking spices and herbal nuances that float in and out, almost tantalizingly so. For being so fresh, the wine coats your mouth in a luxurious way, making your want another sip
