2010 Antichi Vinai "Petra Lava" Etna Bianco

SKU #1070424

For four generations, the Gangemi family has been devoting itself to viticulture and to the improvement of autochthonous Sicilian vines, above all those from the volcano of Etna. Meticulous winemaking and oak aging for 12 months has resulted in this classic Sicilian white made from indigenous grapes - Carricante and Catarratto - planted to sandy volcanic that are hand picked and fermented at a controlled temperature to preserve freshness and typicity. This smells like the Mediterranean itself, with scents of white flowers. There's real vivacity in the mouth, with unique mineral character. This is made for raw fish dishes and shellfish.

I wrote about this wine in the May newsletter, but I like it a lot, so Iíll write about it here too. I was supposed to visit this winery on my last trip to Italy a couple months back, but was faced with being stuck on the north side of Mt. Etna, so had to miss it. (Long story, but the friends I was traveling with who had the rental car had to leave early so I was relying on public transportation to get me back to Catania in time for my flight, and public transportation in that part of SicilyÖ. well, essentially I took a bus that I actually saw in front of me as opposed to one that was maybe, possibly, sort of coming later. Bird in the hand so to speak) Anyway, this is a lovely little blend of mostly Carricante, the main white grape varietal of Etna, with a touch of Cattoratto. Like many wines of Etna, both red and white, itís not an ďin your faceĒ wine; itís slightly reticent, yet quite complex. Yellow plum, peach pit, margarita mix, hints of herb and the lovely volcanic minerality that comes across more as a tactile sensation than a flavor. Lovely wine, great as an aperitif or with lighter dishes. CM
