2010 De Conciliis " Donnaluna" Fiano Paestum (Previously $22)

Located in the relatively uncharted Cilento zone on the Campania coast. From high-altitude vineyards looking out toward the Mediterranean, Bruno DeConciliis specializes in full-bodied, fruit-forward wines. This Fiano shows an intense greenish yellow color and nuances of greenish yellow, very transparent. The nose denotes intense, clean, pleasing and refined aromas that start with hints of apple, pear and plum followed by aromas of hawthorn, broom, hazelnut and peach. The mouth has good correspondence to the nose, a crisp attack and however balanced by alcohol, good body, intense flavors. The finish is persistent with flavors of apple, pear and plum.

You know that old Lay's potato chip commercial with the ad line "Betcha can't eat just one!"? That's how I found myself in regards to Fiano last week. I had just brought in the I Favati Fiano d'Avelino, but then the illustrious and very interesting Bruno Di Conciliis came by with his sales rep and line up of wines, and I had to have his Fiano too (betcha can't buy just one!). This Fiano is from the Cilento DOC, much further south in Campania (essentially it's southern most reaches). The Fianos down here show that intriguing smokey/gamey quality unique to this grape, but tend to be a little lighter and more racy than their counterparts from Avellino, with a salinity that speaks of their proximity to the sea. One of the best Fianos I've had in some time, please make sure this makes an appearance on your table one of these fine summer evenings (or afternoons). Mornings, remember, are for Prosecco... or Guinness, or Bloody Marys. CM
