2007 Remelluri Rioja

SKU #1069164 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2007 Remelluri is composed of 90% Tempranillo, 5% Graciano, and 5% Garnacha fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 16 months in seasoned French and American oak. Deep purple in color, it reveals an already complex bouquet of exotic spices, leather, violets, mineral, and assorted black fruits. In the glass it is succulent with plush fruit, terrific grip and volume, and a lengthy, rich, supple finish. It can be approached now but is likely to continue filling out for several more years. Vivid purple. Exotic, oak-accented aromas of cherry-vanilla, cassis, licorice and dark chocolate. Deep and broad, with highly expressive dark fruit compote and candied licorice flavors framed by youthful tannins. Smooths out nicely on the finish, which clings with serious tenacity and smoky persistence. This will be even better in a couple of years. (10/ 2011)

This is borderline decadent for Rioja. Even though this is a pretty traditional house, this wine has lush deep black fruit that coats the palate. There are nuances of incense with brushy earthy notes. The wine never loses focus, is impeccably balanced, and the finish goes on and on. Worthy of cellaring but not entirely necessary. One to put away and one to drink with a great meal.

A modern fruit forward Rioja with cherry, vanilla flavors, on the border of being a bit over extracted. Not your traditional Rioja.

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Tempranillo

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.
Country:

Spain

- With more land under vine than any other country in the world, Spain is the great sleeping wine giant. In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
