2008 Dow "Senhora da Ribeira" Quinta Port

SKU #1068768 94 points Wine Spectator

Intense and very pure-tasting, offering grapey aromas and flavors that show raspberry and boysenberry overtones, with vanilla and chocolate character. Well-structured, with plenty of grip. Best after 2020. (12/ 2010)

92 points Wine & Spirits

Right from the moment it is poured, this tastes of Douro schist and wild purple fruit. It feels cool, even as it blasts all that mineral spice into flavors of currant, cranberry and apricot. There's also something gamey, as well as green hints of nettles and esteva adding complexity. A pleasing, spicy, short-term Port to enjoy around a decade from the vintage. (12/ 2010)

90 points Wine Enthusiast

Soft, spicy wine, almost tangy in character, with black currant and red cherry fruit flavors and an attractive edge of spice. The acidity gives a lift to the sweetness. (4/ 2011)

K&L Notes

About the vineyard: "Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira is set in the remote, hot and dry Douro Superior and commands a magnificent north bank position, overlooking a broad sweep of the Douro, directly opposite another Symington family-owned vineyard: Quinta do Vesuvio. The quinta was built close to an ancient and strategic river crossing, guarded by two 12th century hilltop castles, either side of the Douro...The quinta’s high proportion of old vines (45% are over 25 years old) is of critical importance. The old vines are very low-yielding, producing on average less than 1Kg of grapes each, giving intense and concentrated musts which are ideal for classic Vintage Port. The remainder of the vineyard was replanted as follows: 21% in 2001 and 34% from 2004, the latter involving mainly Touriga Nacional vines." (dows-port.com)

Portugal

- Although quite small, Portugal produces a great variety of wines ranging from light and fizzy Vinho Verde to hearty and tannic Port. Portugal is Europe's fourth-largest wine-producing region, and has been exporting its wine since the 14th century. The Douro Valley of Portugal is the original and current home for the world's finest Port. The valley spans from east of the city of Oporto all the way to the border of Spain and is the country's best known wine region. Lesser-appreciated DOCs like Bairrada and Dão area also emerging for their fine, rustic reds. Click for a list of bestselling items from Portugal.
Sub-Region:

Port

- Port is a fortified wine made by stopping the fermentation with brandy. The result is a heavy sweet wine, most often red, that is dense, rich and high in alcohol. Port is made all over the world with some great results in Australia and South Africa, but the most famous of these dessert wines come from Portugal. The great port houses (or lodges) are located along the Duoro River on the steep slate slopes high above the valley floor. There are several styles of port, including Ruby, Tawny, Vintage Character, Late Bottle Vintage, Colheita, and Single Quinta. Vintage ports are made in special years that the houses declare.
