2001 was a terrific vintage in Ribera del Duero, one of the top 3 or 4 in the past quarter century. Produced from one of the highest elevation vineyards (850 meters) in the D.O., this crianza bottling shows beautiful ripe mixed berry and plum fruit aromas, which also show hints of hickory smoke. Flavors suggest a combination of sweet dark fruits and savory herbs, and show off the iron like minerality which the best of these wines so often develop with age. There is some distinctive, earthy, cumin like spiciness as well. Clearly, given the fruit intensity and texture in the mouth, this wine is the product of excellent raw material grown in a successful vintage. Given its richness, the acidity is very nicely balanced with the fruit and tannins in this decade old bottle. There is arguably no better wine in the world for grilled lamb than Ribera del Dueros such as this one. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer)
