 *100 Best Wines of 2011* There's something about the way zin ripens in the east-facing hills north of Calistoga that appeals to me in my gut as much as in my brain. It has the freshness of blackberries picked on a hike in Point Reyes. That wild berry flavor tinges toward brighter fruit, layering vibrant strawberry, tart raspberry and cracked black pepper into a savory Napa Valley red. Yum may not be a technical term, but I wrote it twice in a 20 wine tasting, once for this wine and again for Storybook's Antaeus (reviewed on page 69). Balanced, sophisticated and elegant, this gains with air and would be delicious with simple roast leg of lamb.  (10/ 2011)

 Pure and persistent black-berry fruit is the driving force of this deep, very well-balanced wine, and those who would argue that California Zinfandel is all overripe and top heavy need to think again. As usual, Dr. Seps has come up with a very solid, well-structured wine that shows nary a hint of fat. It finishes on a firm note with grippy tannins commending at least a few years of age, and, given the winery track record, we would not be surprised if it improves and holds for a good many more.  Mountain-grown fruit gives this wine an exceptional intensity and purity of flavor. Tastes like the essence of blackberries, sprinkled with black pepper, anise and cocoa. As rich as it is, the finish is perfectly dry. Thereís a rusticity to the texture, but thatís why Zinfandel is Zinfandel. Drink over the next six years, especially with barbecue or fine roasted meats and root vegetables.  (12/ 2011)

A recent visit to Storybook Mountain Vineyards just north of Calistoga reminded me of just why I like these wines so much. The 2008 Storybook Mountain "Mayacamas Range" Napa Valley Zinfandel is the culmination of 35 years of tireless effort by owner/winemaker Jerry Seps. I was so dazzled by the aromas emerging from the glass I forgot I was supposed to be drinking it as well. Fresh blackberries and spice notes awaited me when I did. The wine showed superb concentration and length. If you love California Zinfandel and you have yet to try any of the Storybook wines, this is the next bottle you must buy.

This is great wine from one of California's true soul wine producers. It is made entirely from CCOF certified organic estate fruit from a site that is one of the coolest in all of Napa at the very top end of Calistoga. This zin is concentrated without any heaviness, and has the guts and acidity to age for a very long time- as well as the track record. Buy it for your next BBQ ribs night, and sock some away for the decade to come.

Dark ruby in the glass. Definitely a lighter zin compared to other Napa Zins I've had recently. There are cherries, plums & spice coming from the glass. Fruit turns brambly when you taste it with minerals & spice. There are plenty of acids leaving me to believe this should make an excellent BBQ kabob wine.

Zinfandel

- The bid to name Zinfandel California's "State Varietal" may have failed, but this red wine grape, grown extensively in California since the mid-1800s, is grown in few other places in the world. Sadly, much of what's cultivated today is planted where it's too hot and flat. But when planted to well-drained, hillside vineyards that are warm but not too hot, like those in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley and Amador County in the Sierra Foothills, Zinfandel can produce wines with plenty of character. High in natural alcohol and tannin, grown carefully it can be rich and complex, with dark fruit berry fruit and peppery spice. The most known example of Zinfandel outside of California is Italy's Primitivo, which can be similar in style, but is often a bit lighter and less alcoholic than West Coast examples.
