 Another wine showing better from bottle than it did from barrel, the 2010 Langoa Barton has the typical structured, dense style, but just as I thought earlier on, it is a much softer and more developed wine than one ordinarily expects from proprietor Anthony Barton. It is full-bodied and impressively endowed with subtle oak, rich cassis fruit and notes of new saddle leather, forest floor, cedar wood and spice box. Full, authoritative and dense, this wine should be at its best between 2018 and 2035. (93+)  (2/ 2013)

 Savoury, meaty cassis at first but opens up to a more cedary perfume. Delicate oak spice and a dry but fluid finesse to the very fine tannins. 17/20 points.  (11/ 2012)

Barrel tasting: **V Sweet and fresh with black cherry flavors. The usual elegance of this wine fits perfectly with the hardness of the vintage. At UGC: I tasted this at both the UGC and Fete du Bordeaux in January (2013), and the wine is spectacular. Very ripe cranberry and black cherry fruit aromas and flavors. Quite elegant and forward for a 2010.

This was perhaps my favorite at UGC, and just in case I wasn't sure, I got to taste it again at the Fête. Riper, with crushed blackberries and black cherries on the palate and cigar box on the nose, this is always a stunning wine at a great price. This vintage the Langoa is a bit more approachable than the Léoville. It will continue to show well for the next few years before it goes dorman, and then it will continue to age, mature and evolve for the next 20-plus years.

A more feminine wine than the Léoville-Barton, with super bright, crunchy cherry fruit. Very fresh and long.

I liked this as much as the Léoville. It's made in a more approachable style and should be a good "earlier" drinker.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.

Saint Julien

- St. Julien, the smallest of the four famous appellations of the Haut Medoc, is known for highly extracted, finely structured, Cabernet-based reds. It is nestled between Pauillac to the north and Margaux to the south. Like St. Estephe, there are no first growths in this area. Leoville-las-Cases, Leoville Poyferre, Leoville Barton, Ducru Beaucaillou, and Gruard Larose are the second-growths of St. Julien followed by Lagrange which is the only third-growth. Beychevelle, Branaire Ducru, St. Pierre, and Talbot, which are all fourth-growth wines, round out the grand cru classe chateaux. In the last several vintages, wineries from this appellation have been out-performing their traditional rankings making many of the wines from this region some of the best values in red wine today.
