 Heavily dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, this is a big, bold, black wine, full of immense, smoky tannins. It has a rich structure, followed by deliciously juicy acidity. The dry tannins of Saint-Estèphe are well cushioned by the rich fruit.  (3/ 2013)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

 Composed of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot, this is one of the Gasqueton family's finest efforts to date (although the 2009 was also very good). The dark ruby/purple-tinged 2010 exhibits plenty of delicious red and blackberry fruit, medium body and more size and substance than most past vintages. It should drink well for a decade or more. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

 (a 73/27 blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot; 3.75 ph; 14% alcohol) Dark ruby. Perfumed, floral aromas of black cherry, violet and lavender. Enters bright and fruity, with savory black cherry and blackcurrant flavors, then turns increasingly tight and austere on the back, finishing with slightly astringent tannins and persistent, pure black fruit flavors. Though this is a little tannic at present, there's enough fruit here to allow for optimism: after an excellent 2009, this is yet another very good Capbern-Gasqueton. That it's taken very seriously by the staff at Calon-Segur, which owns this property, can be inferred from the 80% new oak used to age this wine.  (6/ 2011)

Great value wine of good quality. Sweet fruit on the nose with lovely cassis, asian spice and minerality. Astringent finish but nice texture.

For me the revelation of the trip. I had the opportunity to experience this wine for the first time while tasting at Calon-Ségur. Rich raspberry and red berry fruits, a mix of damp earth, exotic Five Spice and a hint of tobacco made for a really dimensional albeit young Bordeaux red. Full-bodied, with lots of promise.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. - The northern-most of the Medoc communes, St. Estephe is quickly becoming one of the favorite areas for both high quality and great value Bordeaux reds. While it has fewer classified growths than the other communes, it also boasts some of the hottest up and coming chateaux of the last several. The most famous chateaux are the second growths Montrose and Cos d'Estournel with Calon Segur (3rd growth), Lafon Rochet (4th growth), and Cos Labory (5th growth) rounding out the cru classe wines. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the area, but plantings of Merlot are on the rise resulting in rounder, fatter, flashier wines than in years past.
