2009 Joel Taluau "Expression" St. Nicolas de Bourgueil

JoŽl Taluau is a fabulous grower in St. Nicolas de Bourgueil known for making some of the purest expressions of cabernet franc in the Loire. All are hand harvested, cuvees are based on vine age and soil composition. Then the wines are fermented and aged in stainless steel, with a light fining and no filtration before bottling.

Perfect summer time cab franc, but not the tutti-fruity sort. Clean, mineral, dark fruit, and a lovely acidity.

Okay, this is not Bordeaux, but it is Cabernet Franc, which just happens to be a Bordeaux varietal. One of the finest, deeply flavored young Bourgueils I can ever recall. Explosive and opulent on the nose, with ripe, concentrated cassis, plum and pepper aromas. There is also an almost charcoal-like mineral undertone that carries over onto the broad, hugely complex, fleshy, viscous, well-structured palate. This is great wine at a ludicrously low price, which Anderson has informed me will most definitely be one of our house reds for however long it is around. 12.5% ABV. (Jim Barr)

Full disclosure. I am a huge fan of the Cabernet Franc varietal in general and the Loire Valley wines in particular. Yet, as much as I love these wines even I am forced to admit that in many cooler vintages the wines can be a bit herbaceous. 2009 is NOT one of those vintages. Itís early days yet with many wines yet to be released, but already this vintage looks like the strongest red wine vintage in the Loire since 2005. The 2009 Joel Taluau "Expression" St. Nicolas de Bourgueil is great Cabernet Franc and a classic bistro wine. Unoaked and unfiltered, with ripe fruit and a surprisingly rich texture. Textbook ripe raspberry and pencil lead notes. Lively. Fresh. Youthfully exuberant. Serve lightly chilled if you wish with your croque monsieur or steak frites.

Cabernet Franc

- While Cabernet Franc, a parent with Sauvignon Blanc to the ubiquitous Cabernet Sauvignon, frequently plays second fiddle in Bordeaux blends (though it does get more props on the Right Bank, where it dominates Cheval Blanc), this lighter, higher acid/lower tannin, early-maturing, perfumed red varietal is far from a wallflower. It is the headliner in the Loire Valley appellations of Saumur-Champigny, Bourgueil, St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Chinon and Anjou-Villages, where it makes exceptional, food-friendly wines. Outside of France, Cabernet Franc can be found in northern Italy, particularly in Friuli and in California where it is frequently used as a blending grape in Bordeaux-style wines. Heartier in the cold than Cabernet Sauvignon, Cab Franc is gaining a foothold in northern and eastern wine regions like Canada, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
