Charles Smith is like the Sammy Hagar of wine, and not just because his curly locks are reminiscent of the one-time Van Halen front man. Like Hagar, Smith is more memorable for his contributions to the world of alcoholic libations than he is his 11 years managing rock bands in Scandinavia. (For those of you not in the know, Hagar may be better remembered for Cabo Wabo premium Tequila than for anything he did with Van Halen.) He first started K Vintners, then the Magnificent Wine Company and now he has the eponymous Charles Smith label, which is dedicated to making wines that pack a punch now, rather than wines that need cellaring to be enjoyed. The Chateau Smith Columbia Valley Cab deftly pulls this off. It's a super-smooth cherry and rose-petal scented Cab with cassis, plum and vanilla flavors that are all harmoniously balanced, while still showing a distinct sense of place. Rock on!
