2008 Esprit de Pavie, Bordeaux

SKU #1064897

With 70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, this is the first vintage for this wine. Gérard Perse, owner of the renowned Châteaux Pavie, Pavie-Decesse, Monbousquet, and Bellevue Mondotte, has produced a new wine called "Esprit de Pavie" under the Bordeaux appellation. This wine is produced on Bordeaux's finest terroirs of gravel, clay, and clay-limestone soils situated on the fully south-facing slopes of the Dordogne Valley. Like the other wines in the Perse collection, Esprit de Pavie receives the same care and attention which produces a distinctive level of quality. The vineyards are cultivated using techniques of integrated pest management. Green harvesting, with a first leaf-thinning at the end of June to expose the grapes to the morning sun, and repeated in mid-August so the bunches may benefit from afternoon sunlight. It is aged for 15 months in second-use barrels from Château Pavie and Château Monbousquet. We tasted this wine in April 2010 and fell in love with it. Great spicy aromas mixed with blackberry fruit. Lively, sexy palate entry and long finish. Decant one hour and enjoy with a steak or cellar it for a few years.

This is the first vintage of this wine. It is comprised of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. The nose is dominated by spice picked up after 15 months in old Monbousquet and Pavie barrels, as well as red raspberry and plum. The red and black fruit takes over on the palate, which is soft and fleshy. The finish is polished and elegant.

Oak, oak and more oak. Shameful that this wine was recommended.
