Darker and richer than Amici’s second label (Olema), this is anchored by ripe cassis and chocolate flavors. Cedary oak and minty accents add complexity, while the mouthfeel is velvety soft, finishing with a touch of warmth. Probably best consumed over the next few years. (5/ 2011)

From the winery: "The 2007 Amici Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend from several excellent vineyards in the Napa Valley. We hand-selected the highest quality grapes from valley floor vineyards on Zinfandel Lane in St. Helena and Maple Lane in Calistoga, and blended them with the finest grapes from high on Spring Mountain. The result is a beautifully balanced wine with the hallmarks of its origins: lush fruit of valley floor vineyards, framed by firm but supple hillside tannins. This wine displays ample aromas of currants and wild berries along with cedar and espresso, while the flavors showcase the essence of black fruits, toffee and mocha."

I have been such a fan of the Cabernets coming from Amici the last ten years, my thoughts were “How can any subsequent production get any better than their great 2004?” Then along comes this Gem from 2007, which may be the best production coming from Amici Cellars to date. All of us absolutely loved the 2004, but the2007 is, by and far, stunningly better. Deep ruby in color, the high profiled nose shows tons of cassis, currants, and blackberries with just a hint of the Napa Valley minerality dust. Broad, expansive, complex, structured, deeply flavored and integrated, silky tannins, this wonderfully balanced Gem should be put away and aged for another seven to ten-plus years. Anderson has informed me that this really needs to be in our cellar in case quantity, and it will. If you have it near-term, decant and air it out for two hours to help open it up. (Jim Barr)

Beautiful cabernet at this price, nice dark chocolate and ripe dark fruit. I drank this in comparison with Amici's second label, Olema, and found this to have a tad more complexity with a rounder and richer feeling. This wine should drink well for the next few years and is ideal with grilled tri-tip steak (or any grilled meat for that matter. Also fantastic with aged cheeses like a Tomme de Savoie.

Another stellar offering from the Amici label, this is a great deal on a big Napa cab. Big, dark fruit shows well on both the nose and palate with solid tanins holding up on the back end. This will pair well with your summer BBQ's!

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
