Auguste Clape, one of the finest producers in Cornas, also produces a substantial syrah. Fruit for this cuvee comes from parcels scattered throughout the appellation, effectively making this a Cornas masquerading as a humble Côtes du Rhône. Vineyard sources include a small plot in the lieu dit Goulin and selected rows on Grand Plantier. In addition, younger vines (planted in the late 1980's-early 1990's) also find their way into this impressive wine. With the glorious 2009 vintage, Clape's Côtes du Rhône is big, deep and rich. Dark purple fruits, bittersweet chocolate, black pepper on both the nose and palate. It's syrah that is built for the cellar..to crack open and fully appreciate in 3+ years onward. 13.5% abv.
