A classic old-style California Chardonnay displaying citrus, lime oil, green apples, with plenty of acidity but very good flavors as well, this is California’s version of a French Chablis. They have been making Chardonnays since 1952, so they are clearly doing something right. This wine should evolve for at least 5-7 years, although some vintages last longer. (12/ 2009)

K&L Notes

Stony Hill's 2007 calls to mind a complex blend of fruit flavors and a notable mineral component from the depths of the soil. These are old world qualities you would expect to find in Burgundian whites, and yet they also describe the classic Stony Hill style with hints of green apple, honeydew melon and peaches in the nose and at the first sip. A flinty note follows from this estate's Spring Mountain terroir. This is a rich, multi-dimensional wine, very aromatic, with notable acidity and low pH. It offers a big mouth feel, subtle power, and a long, long finish.

On our last buyers trip to Napa, Stony Hill was the clear standout against a sea of cabernet sauvignon. Jim McCrea's old school white wines are such a breath of fresh air in a cloud of tannic, full bodied, structured reds. If only more Napa Valley chardonnays could make their wines like this. The vignerons in Burgundy have been doing it right for hundreds of years and Stony Hill is one of only a few who've realized it, emulated it and perfected it!

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. Surprisingly, though, what you get when you buy Chardonnay can differ greatly from country to country and even within one country, depending on the climate where it's grown and how it is vinified and aged. From fresh, crisp and minerally with apple and lemon notes to rich and buttery with tropical fruit overtones, Chardonnay runs the gamut. In France's Burgundy, Chardonnay is the source of the prized wines of Chablis, Corton-Charlemagne, Mâcon, Meursault and Montrachet.
