Zinfandel fruit determines the wine's varietal character; old-vine carignane contributes its own bright fruit and acidity; petite sirah and syrah add peppery spice, depth of color, and firm tannins; grenache brings briar fruit and lively tannins. Fresh raspberry, cherry. Scorched clay/earth minerals, white pepper. Ripe briary fruit entry, elegant tannins, integrated oak spice, great length. The 2009 Three Valleys is, as my colleague previously noted, one of the most compelling vintages of this bottling to date. Zinfandel is one of those varietals I often turn to when faced with solidly American cuisine. The equation only works properly with a balanced wine, however: this is such a wine. There is a nice sweet-tart dynamic, with nice depth to the berry-cherry fruit flavors which stay energetic courtesy of bright acidity. Subtle spice and vanilla shadings frame this nicely, and the wine boasts light tannins and a modest alcohol level, making this pretty darn enjoyable today, tomorrow and no doubt over the next handful of years.

The ridge three valleys '09 is a shining example of what is going to be a fantastic zinfandel vintage. The best of the three valley blends in recent memory- this wine is packed with red fruits, bright acidity, and rich complexity. We've always sold it for less than $20, and this year it's one of the best zin values on our shelves.

Zinfandel

- The bid to name Zinfandel California's "State Varietal" may have failed, but this red wine grape, grown extensively in California since the mid-1800s, is grown in few other places in the world. Sadly, much of what's cultivated today is planted where it's too hot and flat. But when planted to well-drained, hillside vineyards that are warm but not too hot, like those in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley and Amador County in the Sierra Foothills, Zinfandel can produce wines with plenty of character. High in natural alcohol and tannin, grown carefully it can be rich and complex, with dark fruit berry fruit and peppery spice. The most known example of Zinfandel outside of California is Italy's Primitivo, which can be similar in style, but is often a bit lighter and less alcoholic than West Coast examples.
