Uruguay? Where is that again? If this is your first reaction to reading, that's completely fine. Let us fill you in. Uruguay is a small country wedged between Argentina to the west, Brazil to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. And it just happens to produce some wine, the best of which are invariably composed exclusively or primarily of tannat. Here, tannat is blended with 20% Merlot (this is fairly common in France as well) to create a structured, dark fruited wine, with a hint of earthiness and a mineral core which combine to create a wine which is much more satisfying and complex than the humble price tag would suggest. Produced from vineyards located a mere 4 km from the sea, there is a totally different character to this wine than any other South American wine you may have tasted. Try this red from Uruguay and you might well find yourself seeking out more of these under-represented, delicious values.
