The 2009 Syrah Les Voisins is a gorgeous, exciting and totally thrilling wine, especially for the price. It boasts fabulous intensity in its dark fruit, with hints of smoke, tar and licorice that add depth to the highly expressive fruit. This is a fabulous wine for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2021.

Inky ruby. Intensely perfumed nose shows sexy blackberry and cassis aromas complicated by mocha, candied violet and smoky Indian spices. Sappy dark berry preserve and gingerbread flavors are energized by zesty minerality, picking up candied licorice and floral pastille notes with air. Juicy and precise on the finish, which features fine-grained tannins and lingering smokiness. I suspect that this will be approachable in the next couple of years.

Tightly wound, firm and chewy, with a complex mix of tart dark berry, sage, mineral, cedar and loamy earth notes. Full-bodied, ending with a pleasing spicy aftertaste. Best from 2012 through 2021. 1,500 cases made.

K&L Notes
Les Voisins, meaning "the neighbors" in French, is an hommage to the great, small-production grape growers in California. This Syrah hails from the cool climes of the Yorkville Highlands, and it features cool blue fruits, minerality and a strawberrish finish with juicy tannins.
