2008 Maison Jacques Bavard Monthelie Rouge

This exciting Pinot Noir comes from the picturesque village of Monthelie, located next to the more famous village of Volnay. It is from a tiny negociant in Puligny-Montrachet named Jacques Bavard. He comes from a long line of wine-growers, and is dedicated to working with organic and biodynamic growers. I found him thanks to a tip from a friend in Chassagne-Montrachet on my June trip, and was most impressed with the purity of his wines. This comes from 30-year-old vines, and underwent a long cold soak to extract more aromatic elements. It has lovely cherry fruit, and that wonderful note of wild strawberries (Fraises des Bois in French). This is a fresh, bright and wonderful Pinot Noir, at a modest price, thanks to our direct import. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer)

I would drink Burgundy every day if I could afford to do so. White with lunch and red with dinner. Or sometimes red with both lunch and dinner, depending on what I was eating, with perhaps a glass of Chassagne or Chablis, or even an Aligote, as an aperitif. Or maybe just weeks on end of Grand Cru whites, if I were feeling especially indulgent. Suffice to say, I love Burgundy, red or white (or rosé or sparkling for that matter). So I get really excited when I find an exceptional one I can actually afford. This Monthelie bottling from Jacques Bavard is an excellent example of what I've come to love in red wines from the "lesser" communes of the Côte de Beaune: lighter, more high toned fruit, incredible spiciness, silky tannins and fresh acidity. In a word, more "feminine" than the more masculine Volnays, Pommards or the crus of Corton. Just another all out lovely wine to grace Thursday night dinner table. Enjoy!

A classic Burgundy with cherry fruit and hints of strawberry that showcase the best of Pinot Noir grapes!

This is a decent value for Burgundy (great value being under $20) that is more of a food wine than a cocktail wine. Bright acidity keeps the fruit bright and fresh with more strawberry and red cherry flavors and aromas. This wine is very tart and has a knife edge mouth-feel but with a nice dinner the wine will flesh out.

A beautiful Pinot Noir from Burgundy for a ridiculously great price! Bright Red and Blue fruit up front with violets and creme de casis. Mid palate feels a touch modern with extracted pomegranate and cran-rasperry fruit. Great texture with lively acid and minerality. Perfect for drinking with or without food, and a for sure crowd pleaser.

When the Bavard wines first arrived at the end of last year the first to sell out was this 2008 Monthelie Rouge. Now back in stock. Taut. Nervy. Lovely floral aromas with tart, wild strawberry fruit. A "poor man's" Volnay. Try with cold, roast chicken, salad nicoise, or grilled local salmon and fava beans.

The appellation of Monthelie was an exciting new discovery for me this year. Equally exciting was my introduction to the wines of Jacques Bavard! The lineup from this small negociant was extremely well received by our staff during our most recent Burgundy tasting. Pinot Noir

- One of France's most legendary grapes and the grape that earned Burgundy its reputation. The parent of varietals like Pinot Gris/Grigio and Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir is blue to violet to indigo in color with relatively thin skins, and it is said to have been cultivated in France for more than 2,000 years. At its best, Pinot Noir creates elegant wines that are filled with primary red fruit aromas and flavors while young, revealing with an array of secondary characteristics like earth, smoke, violet, truffle and game with age. The varietal is also known, perhaps better than any, for its ability to translate terroir, or a sense of place. While the best Pinot Noir still comes from Burgundy, it is being produced with increasing success in cooler climates around the world. In France, it is part of the trifecta of grapes that can go into Champagne, and it is also grown in Alsace, Irancy, Jura, Savoie, Lorraine and Sancerre. Outside of France it is produced under the names Pinot Nero and Blauburgunder in Italy's mountainous regions, as Spätburgunder in Germany and as Blauburgunder in Austria. In the US, Pinot Noir has found suitable growing conditions in the cooler parts of California, including Carneros, the Russian River Valley, the Anderson Valley, the Sonoma Coast, Monterey County, the Santa Lucia Highlands and Santa Barbara County, as well as in Oregon's Willamette Valley. In recent years, New Zealand has demonstrated its ability to interpret this hard-to-grow varietal, with successful bottlings coming from careful and attentive growers in Central Otago, Martinborough and Canterbury. Chile is also an up-and-coming region for Pinot Noir, creating fresh, fruit-forward, early-drinking and affordable Pinots from the coastal Casablanca Valley and the Limari Valley.

Burgundy

- The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Côte d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Côte de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Côte de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Côte Chalonnaise and the Mâconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Côte d'Or. Volnay

- Sometimes known as the Chambolle Musigny of the Côte de Beaune, Volnay is famous for its silky, elegant wines with finesse, delicacy and an almost ethereal nose. However, the wines have a depth and structure that can allow them to age for decades. Remington Norman said it wonderfully in his book The Great Domaines of Burgundy: 'If the wines of Pommard sometimes seem like a truck-driver's interpretation of Pinot, then those of Volnay are a ballerina's.
