2007 Bisci "Fogliano" Verdicchio di Matelica (Elsewhere $20)

SKU #1060475

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate "The single-vineyard 2007 Verdicchio di Matelica Vigneto Fogliano is a beautiful, elegant wine that stands head and shoulders above most of the whites from the Marche. Rich and generous on the palate, the Vigneto Fogliano impresses for its textured expression of fruit, well-articulated bouquet and long finish. Fragrant peaches, mint, minerals and very light honeyed tones resonate on the close. This is simply a first-class effort from Bisci that readers will not want to miss. Best of all, it is a fabulous value. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2017." Wine Advocate # 189 Jun 2010 Antonio Galloni

Verdicchio, a white grape varietal native to the Marche region of Italy, is often suggested as an Italian alternative to Chardonnay or white Burgundy, as it can be similar in flavor, weight, richness, and acidity. This Verdicchio is a great example of the varietal's potential to also be uniquely delicious, whether you like Chardonnay or not. The nose hints at pineapple, stone fruits, and coconut, with an underlying herbality and nuttiness that dials back the fruit and keeps things interesting. This not an oakey wine - the nutty flavor is a varietal characteristic - but it is richly layered and mouthfilling, with mineral notes adding to fruit flavors echoing the nose. The wine finishes clean and fresh, making it a food-friendly option for anyone seeking a medium-bodied white wine to enjoy with regional seafood specialties, from assorted crudo (raw fish) or whole roasted "branzino" (sea bass) with lemon, olives, and herbs.
