2009 Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc-Viognier

One of the most singular wines we see every year is not some bombastic, cult-y Napa Cabernet or a fully oaked, buttery chardonnay but rather an interesting white blend from tried and true producer Pine Ridge. For years now they have been making a Chenin Blanc/Viognier blend which has been one of the tastiest inexpensive numbers this side of an In-and-Out Cheeseburger. This year’s blend is 80% Chenin which is sourced from the Sacramento River Delta and 20% Viognier from the Lodi Appellation, neither of which see any oak here leaving the freshness of the grapes to shine through. Pleasing aromatics of green apple, peach pit and dried apricots fill the nose. Lively and fresh through out this wine is packed with zippy flavors of mango, papaya, granite and lemon curd. Deliciously ripe but without any heavy handed texture this super affordable bottle will equally appeal to both fans of Domestic Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Great with fresh crab!

Unoaked and with a modest alcohol content of only 11% abv, the aromatic and fruit-forward 09 Pine Ridge blend of 80% Chenin Blanc and %20 Viognier is a standout value in California white wine. This is not your run-of-the-mill flabby fruit bomb, but a bright, balanced, and refreshing just-off-dry white wine that will pair with many different foods. Such a pretty little wine! I get citrus blossoms on the nose, white peaches and just the barest hint of acacia honey on the palate. It's an easy drinker and a real crowd pleaser. Has me planning a little picnic for the first warm day of Spring...
