The Varner Brothers are wizards; in fact I wouldn’t be surprised at all one day if they both walked in decked in robes, sporting staffs in hand. They continuously come up with fantastic sources of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon for their Foxglove series of wines. They scour vineyards to find new yet-to-be-known sites, sign long-term contracts when able and farm the vineyards to their specifications as much as possible. In other words this label is not an afterthought behind their prestigious Varner label, but a sibling that garners just as much attention and care. The 2009 Foxglove Chardonnay shows that amazing attention to detail, the same attention that so few Chardonnays in this price point see. Usually it is all quick and easy, cutting corners and figuring out how to make the wine into the lowest common denominator. No so here, this wine has the class and poise of a wine 2-3 times its price. The key here is the rich, baked apple, lemon preserve and rolled oat flavors balanced with lovely integrated acidity and even some stony minerality. This has been my go to Chard for years and this vintage it has done little to make me look elsewhere.

ok, more sauvignon blancy than chardonnay-y

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine.
