Alberto Carli, the owner of Il Colle loved Brunello and wished to make really great Brunello and only a Riserva capable of long aging. Carli hired the most famous Tuscan Enologist of the day Dott. Giulio Gambelli to be his winemaker and together they created Il Colle Brunello di Montalcino producing 150-200 cases a year that were aged in the wineries underground, rock cellar, staying there, aging never for sale. They planted vines in 1972 and the first vintage was 1978 for a dozen years the two produced this unique Brunello. Then late in life while Carli lay on his deathbed he told his wife about the winery, no one in the family had any idea he had been creating this wine estate for almost 20 years. These wines came direct from the winery's cellar. "Gambelli's notes on 1978 "Il Vendemmia Primera" In 1978 the weather was very good. Wet winter, fresh spring, warm summer reports Gambelli. The grapes were harvested on October 1, it was a great first harvest with no major problems. As always all the grapes were picked by hand. Of all the estates Gambelli has consulted for he considers this perhaps his best premier vintage.
