One of the finest new-world Riojas that I have ever tasted is the Antano 2007 Crianzo Rioja ($9.99), a blend of tempranillo (80%), granacha (5%), mazuelo (5%) and graciano, which presents lip smacking,complex, broad fruit characteristics without being over the top. Deep ruby in color, this Gem explodes from the nose with opulent plums, cassis, blueberry fruit qualities, notable touches of dusty minerality and hints of cedar. In its expansive, ever-changing mouth presentation, you will find all those qualities in spades, plus structure and depth of character. This will definitely be one of our house reds for however long it last, according to Anderson. 13.5% abv (Jim Barr)

I'm no expert, but I have managed to have drank some amazing wines over the years, and have realized that often, my taste exceeds my budget. This wine drinks like it costs $40 or more, but is clearly very affordable at $9.99 a bottle. A classic rioja, it's bold without being overpowering. Fruity without being overbearing. Notes of berry/cherry, vanilla, and a light smokiness that flows through. Let it decant for a while before serving and it opens up like you wouldn't believe. Great for the value!

Tempranillo

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.
