2007 Antaño Crianza Rioja

One of the finest new-world Riojas that I have ever tasted is the Antano 2007 Crianzo Rioja ($9.99), a blend of tempranillo (80%), granacha (5%), mazuelo (5%) and graciano, which presents lip smacking,complex, broad fruit characteristics without being over the top. Deep ruby in color, this Gem explodes from the nose with opulent plums, cassis, blueberry fruit qualities, notable touches of dusty minerality and hints of cedar. In its expansive, ever-changing mouth presentation, you will find all those qualities in spades, plus structure and depth of character. I'm no expert, but I have managed to have drank some amazing wines over the years, and have realized that often, my taste exceeds my budget. This wine drinks like it costs $40 or more, but is clearly very affordable at $9.99 a bottle. A classic rioja, it's bold without being overpowering. Fruity without being overbearing. Notes of berry/cherry, vanilla, and a light smokiness that flows through. Let it decant for a while before serving and it opens up like you wouldn't believe. Great for the value!
