The 1989 vintage was a sunny one overall, with the crop thinned out by a severe frost on April 27th. The harvest was extraordinarily ripe, with the average potential alcohol as much as two degrees higher than normal. This big bottle of rose is composed of 67% Pinot Noir and 33% Chardonnay. The Champagne gets it rusty pink color from 14 % Pinot Noir that is vinified red from the Clicquot's estate vineyard in Bouzy. This is a very subtle rose Champagne, with hints of butter croissant and red cherry fruit. The 1989 is a surprise; this vintage was so ripe and powerful, but Clicquot has made a rose of ultimate restraint. The Champagne tastes expensive, and its elusiveness kept me coming back for another taste. This is classy stuff for a special occasion! Out of magnum, this restrained masterpiece could prove to be ageless… Drink it before you go, or leave it for your kids! 90 points Wine Spectator: "Full-bodied but not boisterous, this impressive rosé combines subtle but ripe fruit nuances with a firm, broad texture. Quite dry, but with a lingering finish. Should improve in the cellar. Drink now through 2001." (11/98)
