The 1978 harvest came late, starting on October 9th; it was also very small because of poor flowering, leaving very little wine for anything but standard non-vintage blends. This Rose is composed of two thirds Pinot Noir and one third Chardonnay. It gets its color from Pinot Noir vinified into red wine from the Clicquot estate vineyards in Bouzy. The cherry pink color has a hint of amber to it. The heady nose is packed full of black cherry Pinot Noir character and perfect hazelnuts. This is savory, powerful Champagne, with wild, developed Pinot Noir gaminess balanced with electric minerality. This 1978 is a fantastic bottle for the Champagne graduate who is looking to explore the vinous side of Champagne. It finishes warm and rich, and I think it would be a perfect partner to duck rillette. This wine has vitality now and should still make great drinking at 40. -Gary Westby, K&L
