It is seldom that you ever get a deal like this from Hermitage. Once again, another importer bites the dust and we gladly (or sadly depending on which side you are on) have another extraordinary bargain. The Colombier is a wonderfully accessible wine benefitting from just the few years of bottle age it has had. There is crushed blackberry, tobacco and white pepper spice flavors and terrific layers of cigar box and pencil shavings on the nose. The tannins are open knit and supple and with just under an hour of decanting this wine is humming along beautifully. This is more graceful than the bombastic 99s and 03s from the region but the classic underlying bacon flavors bring home the fact that Hermitage is one of greatest producers of Syrah. (Keith Mabry, K&L Hollywood) 90 points in the Wine Enthusiast: "Nicely defined on the nose, with precise spice and herbal notes that add complexity to the crunchy red fruit flavors. Ripe tannins and an easy finish make for an approachable Hermitage that should be consumed on the young side. Drink now - 2015." (Sep 07)
