2008 Castello di Verduno "Basadone" (100% Pelaverga)

The Castello di Verduno, owned by Gabriella Burlotto and Franco Bianco, is a beautiful old building at the top of the village of Verduno, on the edge of the Barolo zone. The Castello di Verduno wine label unites two cellars, one under the castle in the Barolo zone and the other near the famous 'cru' Rabajà, in the Barbaresco area. Wines are produced in Barbaresco and bottled and stored in Verduno. The vineyards owned by Verduno are the Barbaresco crus, Faset and Rabajà, the last being one of the best vineyards in Barbaresco, and the Barolo crus Monvigliero and Massara. All wines are vinified traditionally by Mario Andrion, the talented young enologist who took over the cellar in 2000. The estate also produces a small amount of delicious Langhe Nebbiolo, and an excellent example of the variety indigenous to Verduno, Pelaverga. Pelaverga produces red wines that are light in color but savory and distinctive on the palate. This one is aged for 3 months in large wood and 6 months in stainless steel before bottling without filtration. The winery's website cannot be improved on for a description: 'Soft, though bright ruby red. Intense fragrant nose, showing clear spicy overtones of black pepper and nutmeg, as well as fruity sensations reminiscent of cherries in spirit and strawberries. Nicely-balanced, lingering dry flavour.' Great with salumi.

This is a really exquisite wine from Northern Piedmont called Pelaverga that drinks like a Pinot Noir but with more spice and acid. On the nose white pepper, flowers, rose petals, and red cherry fruit. On the mid-palate its medium bodied and elegant. Very small production, only 100 hectars planted in the world! If you enjoy nebbiolo then you will love this!

One of my new favorite wines in the store, if you are even remotely of the wine geek ilk, you simply HAVE TO try this little gem. Verduno is the northernmost of the eleven villages of Barolo, and this is the only place in Italy, indeed the world, that Pelaverga is grown. I've been told there are only about 100 hectares of it planted. For those who have an understanding of Latin based languages, you can see this grape has a bit of a risque name. The story goes there was a count of some sort back in the 18th century that used to have huge parties where he would serve wine made from the grape now known as Pelaverga, and these parties had a tendency to digress into massive, drunken all night orgies. I'm not making this up! (just a little bummed I missed them perhaps). Anyway, this example is utterly delicious. Rather light in color with insanely wild aromatics of black pepper, rose petal, bright cherry, raspberry essence, and a healthy dose of Burgundian like forest floor. All these flavors come out on the medium bodied, lightly tannic palate, with great length and penetration. Not a big wine by any means, but a lovely, elegant, and dare I say sexy little bottle. Very food friendly too. Again, an absolute must try for anyone who loves unusual wines. CM

100% pela-what? I am always humbled by how much I don't know about Italian wines and this new red from Piedmont made from Pelaverga is totally radical. A thin and lighter styled body with high-tone fruit, but a mouthful of crushed black pepper to boot. This needs a shank of lamb or a spicy pork chop to mellow it out. From Piedmonte, but of a rarely used varietal. Fun, fun, fun.

Sub-Region:	Piedmont - Piedmont is in the Northwestern region of Italy, bordering France and Switzerland. Piedmont is predominantly a plain where the water flows from the Swiss and French Alps to form the headwaters of the Po river. The major wine producing areas are in the southern portion of the region in the hills known as the "Langhe". Here the people speak a dialect that is 1/3 French and 2/3 Italian that portrays their historical roots. Their cuisine is one of the most creative and interesting in Italy. Nebbiolo is the King grape here, producing Barolo and Barbaresco. In addition, the Barbera and Dolcetto are the workhorse grapes that produce the largest quantity of wine. Piedmont is predominantly a red wine producing area. There are a few whites made in Piedmont, and the Moscato grape produces a large volume of sweet, semi-sweet and sparkling wines as well.
